Hospitality often means welcoming guests with warmth and kindness. But what if hospitality could be more than just a polite gesture? What if it could be a radical act of healing, connection, and transformation? The Sankofa Re-Treat offered exactly that: a space where radical hospitality introduced a practice of returning to our roots, embracing community, and nurturing growth.
Radical hospitality challenges the usual ways we think about welcoming others. It asks us to open our hearts fully, to listen deeply, and to create environments where everyone feels truly seen and valued. The Sankofa Re-Treat embodies this spirit by combining cultural reflection, personal growth, and collective care.

What Radical Hospitality Means at the SWDG LLC Radical Hospitality: Sankofa Re-Treat
At its core, radical hospitality is about more than offering food or shelter. It is about creating a space where people can reconnect with the Divine, themselves, and each other in meaningful ways. The Sankofa Re-Treat draws inspiration from the African concept of Sankofa, which means "to go back and fetch it." This idea encourages us to look back at our history and traditions to move forward with wisdom.
The retreat invited participants to engage in practices that honor their heritage, share stories, and build trust. This approach helped break down barriers and fostered a sense of belonging. Radical hospitality here means:
Listening without judgment to understand others’ experiences deeply
Sharing resources generously to support everyone’s needs
Creating safe spaces where vulnerability is welcomed
Encouraging mutual respect across diverse backgrounds
These principles guided every activity and interaction at the retreat, making it a powerful model for community building.
Activities That Bring Radical Hospitality to Life
The Sankofa Re-Treat offers a variety of activities designed to embody radical hospitality in action. These include:
Story Circles: Participants gather in small groups to share personal stories and cultural histories. This practice builds empathy and connection.
Healing Workshops: Sessions focused on emotional and spiritual healing through meditation, movement, and reflection.
Communal Meals: Food is prepared and shared collectively, emphasizing nourishment and togetherness.
Each activity is designed to foster openness and trust, helping participants feel welcomed and supported.

Why Radical Hospitality Matters Today
In a world where many feel isolated or disconnected, radical hospitality offers a way to rebuild community and trust. The Sankofa Re-Treat showed us how welcoming others with openness and care can lead to healing on both personal and collective levels.
This approach is especially important for Black and Brown communities that have experienced trauma and marginalization. Radical hospitality creates a space where people can reclaim their stories and identities without fear. It also encourages participants to carry these values back into their daily lives, spreading kindness and understanding.
By practicing radical hospitality, in times of military occupation of cities by military personnel, reduced government benefit payout, cost of living increases and, natural disasters, we can challenge social divisions and build stronger, more inclusive communities.
How You Can Practice Radical Hospitality
You don’t need to attend a retreat to bring radical hospitality into your life. Here are some practical ways to start:
Be fully present when someone shares their story or experience. Listen with empathy, not just waiting to respond.
Offer help without expecting anything in return. Small acts of kindness can have a big impact.
Create welcoming spaces in your home, workplace, or community where people feel safe and valued.
Learn about others’ cultures and histories to deepen your understanding and respect.
Encourage open dialogue and honest conversations about difficult topics.
These steps can transform everyday interactions into moments of connection and healing.
Radical hospitality is a powerful practice that invites us to slow down, open up, and care deeply for one another. The Sankofa Re-Treat provides a living example of how this approach can transform lives and communities. By embracing radical hospitality, we take a step toward a more compassionate and connected world. We will hold our 3rd annual Radical Hospitality Sankofa Re-Treat in October 2026.
