Our primary gathering site is SpringHill Suites Atlanta Northwest. Should registration size call for a more intimate station, the re-treat may shift to SpiritWork Development Group LLC headquarters in Hiram, Georgia. Final location details will be shared directly with registered participants.

The Radical Hospitality Sankofa Re-Treat is a sacred gathering for rest, reflection, restoration, and liberation-centered formation.

Rooted in Sankofa, Womanist ethics, Africentric wisdom, Black Liberation theology, and embodied communal care, this re-treat creates space for leaders, caregivers, chaplains, clergy, entrepreneurs, healers, ministry leaders, and community builders to breathe, remember, reconnect, and return with renewed clarity.

This year, we honor the sacred witness of Harriet Tubman, Rachel Ross, and Marie Laveau as we reflect on what it means to conduct the freedom train, hold the station, reframe what is already in our hands, and midwife what helps the people get free and stay free.

Friday opens with ancestral witness. Rachel Ross and Harriet Tubman become sacred guides for holding the station, conducting the freedom road, discerning danger, protecting the vulnerable, and practicing leadership rooted in liberation. This opening station frames the day’s pastoral care work through courage, wisdom, spiritual discernment, and communal responsibility.

Signs and Surviving Intimate Partner Violence: Family This Is What It Is, This Is What It Can Be

This workshop offers a sacred and serious space to recognize signs of intimate partner violence, honor the survival wisdom of those impacted, and consider how caregivers, clergy, chaplains, and community leaders can respond with care, safety, dignity, and spiritual sensitivity. This session centers survivor agency, pastoral responsibility, and the sacred work of refusing shame, silence, and spiritual bypassing.

Discerning the Right Intervention- Rev. Dr. Rhonda James-Jones

Listening with Spirit, Ancestors, and Theological Wisdom

This workshop becomes the faithful response to the IPV conversation and then widens the lens to other forms of harm. Participants will reflect on how to discern what is needed when harm is present: when to listen, when to refer, when to pray, when to pause, when to document, when to create safety, and when to resist the urge to fix. Using intervention cards and journal reflection, participants will explore Spirit-led, ethical, embodied responses to harm, grief, fear, trauma, silence, institutional wounds, and spiritual distress.

An Introduction to Womanist and Africentric Ministry

This workshop opens the door to Womanist and Africentric ministry as embodied, ancestral, liberative, communal, and rooted in the struggle for wholeness. Participants will explore Black womanhood as sacred theological location, African memory as ministerial inheritance, and liberation as the ground of faithful leadership.

Comb, Crown, Call, Conjure-

Marie Laveau, Sacred Reinvention, and Spiritual Entrepreneurship

Marie Laveau’s witness invites us to consider the sacred power of reinvention. This workshop explores spiritual entrepreneurship as a pathway of discernment, provision, communal care, and liberation-centered sustainability. Especially in seasons of economic uncertainty, institutional change, career transition, and vocational disruption, many are being called to reframe their gifts and discern new ways of being financially, spiritually, and communally healthy.

Radical Hospitality as Sacred Infrastructure- Rev. Dr. Rhonda James-Jones

Building Stations Where People Can Breathe, Belong, Tell Truth, and Become

Radical Hospitality is more than welcome. It is a sacred, liberation-centered practice of designing spaces where people can remember who they are, reclaim their wellness, experience belonging, tell the truth, and return to their lives with greater freedom and wholeness. This workshop explores hospitality as spiritual infrastructure for communal survival, healing, and transformation. Participants will consider how to build stations of care, protection, embodied rest, truth-telling, sacred welcome, provision, and sending.

Continuing Education / Contact Hours

The Radical Hospitality Sankofa Re-Treat includes six 90-minute School of Sekhmet introductory professional development workshops, for a total of up to 9 continuing education/contact hours.

These workshops are designed to support ongoing professional formation for chaplains, clergy, pastoral care providers, spiritual caregivers, ministry leaders, and helping professionals. APC/BCCI Board Certified Chaplains may use these hours toward their annual continuing education documentation, as appropriate to their certifying body’s guidelines and individual maintenance requirements.

Participants are responsible for confirming applicability with their credentialing or certifying organization. A certificate of participation documenting workshop titles and contact hours will be available upon completion of the retreat.
